José Manuel Cerqueira Afonso dos Santos, figlio di un giudice e di una professoressa di scuola primaria, nacque ad Aveiro il 2 Agosto 1929 e passò i primi anni della sua vita tra la terra natale, l’Angola ed il Mozambico.

“Animale cantante” fu il soprannome che gli affibbiarono al liceo, dato che cantava serenate durante i primi giorni di scuola, giorni in cui gli studenti fanno una serie di feste ai nuovi studenti. In questo periodo conosce la vita “bohemienne” ed il fado tradizionale di Coimbra....
